John saw it again.
A faint flicker when he charged his ring. Something in that green glow that wasn’t really there.
“Hal.”
“So you’re the new boy.”
“Who are you calling ‘boy’?”
“Big talk. Hope you’ve been polishing up my ring.”
“You destroyed your ring.”
“It should have stayed that way.”
“You were a good man, once.”
“I was always a good man.”
“Even when you destroyed a planet?”
“They deserved it. Didn’t you ever destroy people, Marine?”
“Hardly a comparison.”
“Big evil, little evil. All a question of degree?”
The glow faded. Hal faded.
John’s eyes still glowed green.
